It’s the 23rd October 2022 and the New York Giants are 6-1. I’m writing this 15 minutes after a nail-biting finish in Jacksonville which saw the Giants do everything they could to give the Jaguars a chance to snatch a victory. Thankfully, the defence came up incredibly big and got the stop at the one yard line as time expired. Daniel Jones had an excellent game and it actually felt like he had command of the offence and was putting us in positions to win. He rushed for over 100 yards as did Saquon who also had a fantastic game. The idea that a team who started the game without their top three wide receivers, and by the end was without their rookie first round Right Tackle and starting rookie Tight End. The way the Giants have been able to win some of these games this year can only be attributed to the new coaching staff who have this franchise feeling like winners again for the first time in a decade.
When the season finished last year I was praying that Dave Gettleman would be sacked and Joe Judge would follow him. I’d accepted that Judge would probably hold on to his job, but I was gutted knowing that this was the year Brian Daboll would be available. Then it happened…I was lying in my bed scrolling Twitter hoping for the news, and Josina Anderson confirmed it, Joe Judge had been sacked. As soon as I heard that, I started dreaming of the perfect combination of the Buffalo duo – Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll. Daboll has come in and has got every Giants player playing with the confidence that they can contribute and help to win football games. The team is clearly playing with more awareness and passion, and that’s leading to wins. He is without a doubt the favourite for Coach of the Year.
The question is, can they keep this up? None of these wins felt like slam dunks! It feels like we have scraped a lot of them, and that leads you to feel that potentially there is some luck involved. I will bloody take it though. One week till the bye, with the Seahawks currently in the way of us going in to that with a 7-1 record. There will be another post coming whatever the result.
