Giants 2022 Free Agency Follow Up

As the 2022 league year kicks off, the Giants are a team with very little on the surface to be excited about. As the most exciting free agency period in the history of the NFL is in full swing, one team who are well clear of any blockbuster trades and storylines are my team, the New York Football Giants.

I have been a fan of the NY Giants since the 2014 season. I saw some initial success and a playoff visit, followed by years of poor QB play, poor coaching and poor team decisions. With a brand new GM in Joe Schoen and HC in Brian Daboll, we reset back to where we hope the Giants can begin a rebuild, that will eventually take us back in to contention in the NFC. At this stage, success in the NFC East still feels far away.

The worry was that Joe Schoen would come in and try to make some splash moves to get fans excited, but free agency has been quite the opposite. In fact, the 2022 free agency for the NY Giants has been inherently boring which is exactly how it should be. Signings of Mark Glowinski (G) and Joe Feliciano (OL) show initial signs that the first time GM fully appreciates the severity of the team’s offensive line woes. The addition of Tyrod Taylor (QB) to ‘back up’ Daniel Jones also provides a clear picture of the plan at QB. DJ will be the starter, but Taylor is a veteran in this league, and if DJ does not perform, there is sure to be pressure to start the new addition by Thanksgiving. Either way, the Giants are sure to be active in the QB market next year with a much better selection of QB talent available in the draft.

These moves plus an additon of a Tight End, Wide Receiver, Guard and a Running Back shows the intention of thickening out a depleted offence. The Giants will hope these help to support the talent of Saquon Barkley who is coming off a recovery year from a torn ACL who needs to play at a high level if he hopes to secure a new contract, and 2021 additions Kenny Golladay (Free Agency) and Kadarius Toney (Draft). There is lots of talent on paper, but the 2021 season showed how many flaws this offence had.

We are 5 weeks away from the 2022 draft which is set to be an exciting one for Giants fans with 2 picks inside the top 10. Let’s hope Joe Schoen continues his promising start to his Giants tenure.
